On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crashed high in the Andes while carrying members of the Old Christians Club rugby team along with their friends and families. The aircraft broke apart against the mountains and came to rest on a glacier roughly 12,000 feet above sea level. Those who survived the crash suddenly faced extreme cold, devastating injuries, and almost no food. Then the survivors heard devastating news over a transistor radio: the official search had been called off. No one was coming for them. With their food exhausted and no vegetation or animal life around them, the survivors were eventually forced to make a decision that would define the story in the eyes of the world. But starvation was only one threat. An avalanche killed eight more people, and attempts to escape the mountains repeatedly failed. After more than two months in the mountains, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa set out on foot to find help. Their journey eventually led them beyond the snow
