A dead star came back to life — and now, nearly 30 years later, astronomers have discovered that it is changing again. Known as Sakurai’s Object, this extremely rare “born-again star” unexpectedly reignited in 1996 after reaching the final stages of stellar evolution. Since then, scientists have watched it transform at a speed almost never seen in astronomy. New observations using the Very Large Telescope reveal that Sakurai’s Object has become roughly six times hotter, developed a powerful stellar wind, and entered a new Wolf-Rayet-type phase. Even more intriguing, the star appears to be reheating differently from what some stellar evolution models predicted. So how can a dying star seemingly come back to life? What triggered Sakurai’s Object to reignite? And what is this strange star becoming now? In this video, we follow the extraordinary story of one of the fastest-changing stars ever observed — from its mysterious appearance in 1996 to the latest discovery revealing what happened
