In this talk, Bhargavi Rao shares four environmental stories. The first story focuses on a village in north Bangalore called Mavallipura, which was the site of a massive landfill that had contaminated the local water sources with bacteria such as E. coli, as well as contaminants such as lead and mercury. In the second story, she takes us from Mavallipura to grasslands closer to central Karnataka, known as the Amrit Mahal Kaval grasslands. These grasslands were home to an indigenous breed of sheep known as the Deccani sheep and a breed of cattle known as the Amrit Mahal cattle. However, much of this land was diverted towards a development called "Science City", which displaced many among the local population. The third story she tells is of the neighbouring district of Tumkur, where a great deal of land has been converted into a solar park, which also left many locals fending for themselves. Her final story is of the lakes of Bangalore and the concept of lakes as an urban commons. Whil
