Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev directly called on German citizens to remove Chancellor Friedrich Merz, warning in a September 22 post on X that Merz was dragging Germany toward war with Russia and urging Germans to act before that happened, adding the pointed phrase you know the consequences of such wars in what appeared to be a reference to Germany's devastating experience in the Second World War. Medvedev described Merz as a pathetic disgrace whose neo-Nazism, Russophobia and Ukraine obsession had made him Germany's most useless chancellor, and said even his predecessor Olaf Scholz looked better by comparison, characterisations that represent Medvedev's own views. The remarks came amid sustained tension between Moscow and Berlin over Germany's continued military and financial support for Ukraine under the Merz government, and mark one of the sharpest direct interventions by a senior Russian official in German domestic politics in the current conflict period.
