Why does a ratchet make that satisfying clicking sound while turning a bolt in only one direction? Inside this simple hand tool is a clever mechanical system involving a toothed gear, a spring-loaded pawl, and specially shaped teeth that allow motion one way while locking it in the other. In this video, we break down what happens inside a ratchet, why it clicks, how the pawl works, why ratchets are so useful in tight spaces, how the reversing switch changes direction, and why some ratchets have more teeth than others. It’s a simple mechanism with an surprisingly clever solution to a very practical problem.
