Donald Trump’s criticism of the deal to cede the Chagos Islands to Mauritius was “not news to us”, the Defence Secretary has said, as he warned the Government faces “painstaking work” ahead to resolve the sovereignty dispute. Wes Streeting also warned ignoring Mauritius’s claims to sovereignty over the archipelago, backed by an advisory International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling in 2019, could imperil a UK-US military base on Diego Garcia.
