“We are not creating leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today.” This talk challenges the idea of the “perfect child” and reveals the hidden emotional cost of constantly meeting others’ expectations. It explores how perfectionism can create anxiety, burnout, and a fragile sense of self-worth built on achievement rather than identity. Through compelling examples, Ethan Pattoo, a final year secondary school student, highlights the importance of allowing young people to make mistakes, embrace uncertainty, and discover who they truly are. Ethan Pattoo is a student at Westcoast International Secondary School in Mauritius. He is also a competitive judoka, representing the Akira Kai JC club This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
