NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte warned that the alliance could face simultaneous pressure from Russia in Europe and China in the Indo-Pacific if Beijing moves against Taiwan. Speaking in Des Moines, Rutte said NATO must be prepared “everywhere” and urged European allies to strengthen their conventional defence as the United States focuses increasingly on the Indo-Pacific and other strategic priorities. US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker said Washington had previously believed it could fight a two-front global war but now needed more capable allies. He also warned that a future conflict could begin with attacks on infrastructure, technology and increasingly sophisticated hybrid warfare.
