Only 50 of the United Nations' 193 member states — roughly a quarter of the body — backed a statement of support for Ukraine at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday, with notable absentees including the United States, China, India, Brazil and South Africa, as EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas read out the list of signatories while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called on Russia to agree to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, however, appeared to contradict Ukraine's ceasefire push the same day, admitting when asked about Ukraine's proposals for an energy and grain ceasefire following his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that such an arrangement won't solve the war.
