Chinese President Xi Jinping called for cooperation and dialogue with the United States during his state visit, telling President Donald Trump that the two countries would both lose through confrontation and should keep competition fair and within limits. Xi said Beijing and Washington should maintain a “non-conflict and non-confrontation” bottom line and called for regular military communication and stronger mechanisms to prevent crises. He also said the “Thucydides trap” between a rising and established power could be overcome. Xi highlighted potential cooperation in artificial intelligence, counter-narcotics, law enforcement, investment and direct flights, while saying AI development should remain under human control. He also said China’s national rejuvenation and Trump’s “Make America Great Again” agenda could go hand-in-hand. Xi announced an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China over the next five years and said two pandas would soon arrive at Zoo Atlanta. #xijin
