Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary Helen Whately defends Conservative plans to place some long-term benefit claimants on a restricted welfare card. Under the proposal, the card could not be used to buy alcohol or cigarettes, place bets, or withdraw cash. Universal Credit could also be cut by a third after six months for claimants deemed capable of working, although those with a sufficient contribution record would receive longer protection. Helen says taxpayers should fund essential support — not a lifestyle — and insists: “If you can work, you should work.” #Benefits #UniversalCredit #Conservatives Have you got a story?
