The reception quickly sparks criticism, with some questioning why America’s rivals appear to receive greater ceremony than key allies. As Trump returns the diplomatic gestures Xi offered during his Beijing visit, the optics raise questions about protocol, strategy and the evolving U.S.-China relationship.
