After Apollo 8 brought humans to lunar orbit for the first time, it was time to start getting serious about the lunar landing. But the major hurdle that remained was the lunar module, or LM. It had not yet been fully tested. The task of Apollo 9 was to bring the LM to Low Earth Orbit, and run through all the tasks that would have to take place in order for a lunar landing to occur. The CSM and LM had to dock, astronauts transfer between them, fly independently, utilize both the descent and ascent stages, and then successfully rendezvous with the CSM. Let's get a closer look at this incredible mission now!
