We've been told the future of AI looks like ever-bigger data centers — warehouses that drink a town's water and draw a city's power so the same two chatbots can answer everyone's questions. Dimitrios Nikolopoulos, who has spent 30 years in high-performance computing, thinks that future is both unnecessary and a dead end. His provocation: the leaps in computing have almost never come from making machines bigger. They've come from making them smaller. An iPhone 7 outran the fastest supercomputer of 1995. A game console beats the one that topped the year 2000. Follow that curve forward and the picture flips. Instead of intelligence locked inside a handful of remote, resource-hungry mega-centers, it could live on small, capable devices — the kind you could put in a home, a school, or a business. And that's not a downgrade; it's a more resilient, more private, more sustainable, and more personal way to compute, and it's exactly what his lab is building. He brings it down to one example yo
