French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Pope Leo XIV to the Élysée Palace on Friday as the pontiff began a four-day visit to France, the first official state visit by a pope to the country in 18 years. Macron and his wife Brigitte greeted Leo before the pope and president held talks, with Macron saying the visit offered hope to people facing the world’s crises. Macron highlighted the reconstruction of Notre-Dame Cathedral and called for human beings to retain their central role as artificial intelligence advances, saying AI should be a “servant and not a master.” He also called for international arrangements to ensure powerful AI systems do not come under the control of a small number of actors. Macron praised the Catholic Church’s focus on climate change and biodiversity, while Leo is scheduled to visit UNESCO, Notre-Dame and attend a large youth vigil during his stay. #popeleoXIV #popeleo #pope #vatican #macron #emmanuelmacron #france #paris #popefrance #papalvisit #ai #artificial
