Emperor-King Charles V was the overlord and ruler of a lot of European territory as well as the growing Spanish Empire in the Americas, too. Most monarchs at this point just passed everything they owned to their heir but when Charles abdicated in 1556, he split his empire up. Giving his Austrian lands and the Holy Roman Empire to his brother, Ferdinand and giving his Spanish lands, souther Italy, the Netherlands and Milan to his son, Philip. So why did he do this? Why split his empire up and not just give it all to his son and heir? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.
