Australians are constantly being told there are difficult choices to make because there’s only so much money to go around. So I think it’s fair to ask the same question of government that families and businesses have to ask themselves every day. Are we getting VALUE for what we’re spending? The Australian Government says part of the growth in the public service has come from deliberately bringing outsourced work back in-house. Since the October 2022 Budget, more than 13,000 public service roles have replaced work previously performed through outsourced arrangements. That may save money compared with paying consultants and contractors in some cases. But the public service has also grown beyond those conversions, and the Parliamentary Budget Office says the cost of the public service has remained around 3.8% of GDP over the past 20 years.
