England’s latest Sustainable Farming Incentive funding window closed less than six hours after opening, with the available budget fully allocated. The scheme pays farmers to manage land in ways that support nature and the environment. Farmers who missed out now face uncertainty over plans they had hoped to fund through the scheme. The rapid closure has also prompted criticism from rural Labour MPs as the government faces wider pressure over its farming policies. The Countryside Alliance is calling on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to improve access to funding and reset the government’s relationship with rural communities. Charlie Rowley speaks with Mo Metcalf-Fisher, Director of External Affairs at the Countryside Alliance. Have you got a story?
