Andy Burnham has ruled out calling an early general election and says the country will not go back to the polls before 2029. The Prime Minister says his focus is on governing rather than starting another election campaign, despite weeks of speculation that Labour’s improved polling could tempt him to seek his own mandate. Former newspaper editor Neil Wallis questions whether Burnham has yet shown the substance needed for the job and argues that his early popularity could fade if voters do not see bigger changes.
