Hundreds of students and activists marched through Hamburg on Saturday against Germany’s increased defence spending and its new military-service system. Protesters carried banners opposing conscription and the country’s military build-up, while some called for Germany to remain focused on diplomacy and peace. The demonstration came during the Bundeswehr’s “Red Storm Charlie” civil-military exercise in Hamburg. Germany’s new military-service rules, in force since January 2026, initially rely on voluntary service, while mandatory medical screening for men born from 2008 is due to begin in July 2027. The Bundestag could also approve compulsory service if volunteer numbers prove insufficient or the security situation deteriorates. #hamburg #germany #germanprotest #hamburgprotest #germanyrearms #rearmament #militaryservice #conscription #bundeswehr #germanymilitary #antwar #peaceprotest #germanpolitics #europe #nato #defencespending #militarybuild up #germanynews #europeanews #timesnowworl
