Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of Madrid to protest Spain’s worsening housing crisis, following the dramatic eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from the home where she had lived for nearly seven decades. Demonstrators are demanding stronger tenant protections, action against rising rents, anti-fraud measures, and a ban on evictions when no alternative housing is available. The protest in central Madrid saw thousands gather around Puerta del Sol, with activists later setting up tents in the square. Authorities estimated around 25,000 protesters, while organizers claimed the turnout was far higher. Abascal’s eviction has become a symbol of Spain’s broader housing problems, as rising rents, limited affordable housing, gentrification and pressure on housing supply fuel growing public anger. The Bank of Spain has previously estimated a nationwide housing shortage of hundreds of thousands of homes. #SpainHousingCrisis #MadridProtests #MadridHousingCris
