Russia has renewed its demand for the release of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called for their “prompt release” and criticized the U.S. detention of the couple following the January 2026 U.S. operation in Venezuela. Lavrov also argued that Maduro’s detention without a trial violated international norms and protections for senior state officials. The United States, meanwhile, has accused Maduro of serious criminal offenses, while Moscow disputes Washington’s position and continues to demand his release.
