Sea surface temperatures are already reaching extreme levels, but some of the most surprising heat is actually hidden beneath the Pacific. NOAA has detected major subsurface temperature anomalies while the atmosphere above the ocean is beginning to respond through changing winds, rainfall patterns, and tropical weather activity. According to NOAA’s latest El Niño forecast, there is now a greater than 90% chance of a very strong El Niño during fall and winter 2026–27 — and a 75% chance that the October–December period could exceed previous El Niño events in NOAA’s record dating back to 1950. Could Super El Niño 2026 become one of the strongest El Niño events ever observed? And what could a record-breaking El Niño mean for hurricanes, drought, rainfall, global temperatures, and weather around the world? In this video, we investigate the Pacific Ocean warming,
