#semiconductor #chipwar #apple Huawei's 7nm-class Kirin 9050 Pro just delivered a result that sounds impossible: it beat Apple's 3nm A17 Pro in Geekbench 6 multicore performance. But Huawei didn't achieve this by suddenly matching Apple's transistor technology. The real breakthrough is something much more interesting. Huawei is using a new approach called **Tau Scaling** and its commercial **LogicFolding** architecture to extract more performance from a mature semiconductor process. Instead of relying entirely on smaller transistors, Huawei is stacking active silicon layers, shortening data paths and reducing the distance information has to travel inside the chip. Huawei reports that LogicFolding can reduce core routing lengths by around 20%, shorten critical timing paths by up to 70%, increase transistor density by approximately 55%, and dramatically reduce power consumption across CPU, GPU and NPU workloads. The result? A 7nm-class chip that can outperform Apple's older 3nm A17
