Surveillance drones have detected nearly 500 shark alerts along New South Wales beaches in the past three months, prompting an expanded monitoring programme following last summer's deadly attacks. The drone operation has increased fivefold compared to last year, with pilots manually identifying shark species and size before notifying lifeguards who decide whether to close beaches. A trial of AI technology will be introduced this summer to automatically verify shark sightings and potentially enable autonomous drone surveillance across the coastline.
