Cumberland has one of the highest suicide rates in England, while drug-related deaths are also among the highest in the country. Shingi Mararike looks at how decades of industrial decline, stigma around mental health and substance abuse have affected the community of Whitehaven and meets the local people trying to break the cycle. From a former drug addict helping others through recovery, to a man using his own experience of suicide attempts to support people in crisis, we see how one community is fighting back. At the heart of the response is Hope Haven, one of six pilot centres being established across the country, with the government planning to roll out the model more widely later this year. ☎️ If you've been affected by this story and want to talk to someone, you can call the Samaritans free on 116 123 or visit samaritans.org. #cumberland #mentalhealth #skynews SUBSCRIBE to our YouTube channel for more videos: http://www.youtube.com/skynews Follow us on X: https://twitter.
