How Does a Solar Water Heater Work?

The solar water heater in our rental house was occasionally running out of hot water. After investigating the problem I found out that this house has a solar water heater with a mechanical timer that switches the power going to the electrical elements on and off. The time on our timer was set wrong so in my case, I simply had to adjust the time and the problem seems to have went away on it's own. This is an interesting set up and is becoming more popular since an electric water heater is a big portion of the electric bill you get each month.
