A young film enthusiast explores how the cinematic experience has evolved for a generation shaped by streaming, social media and algorithms. She reflects on the importance of diverse storytelling, the changing role of technology, and the risk of valuing spectacle over substance. Drawing on examples from classic and modern cinema, Alice highlights how films can challenge stereotypes, shape culture, and forge human connections. She argues that as cinema continues to develop, we must not lose sight of what makes it unique: its power to capture our full attention and bring us together through shared stories. ‘Why Cinema Matters’. Driven by her interest in culture, Alice is passionate about theatre and film. She is studying drama, religious studies, and English at A-level alongside writing a research project on method acting. Her acting experience includes taking part in a BBC production and playing lead roles in musical theatre productions. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED
