Five men arrested near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offences and preparing a terrorist act have been released on police bail. Counter Terrorism Policing says they remain under investigation and face strict conditions on their movement and contact with others. The arrests followed reports of three suspicious vehicles near the airbase. Police are still working to establish what the men were doing and say they are considering multiple possibilities, including potential involvement by people acting for a foreign state. Former counterterror chief Chris Phillips doubts the incident will turn out to be terrorism. He argues that the release on bail points towards a less serious explanation, while acknowledging that the investigation has yet to establish what happened. Ian Collins speaks with Chris Phillips, former head of the National Counter Terrorism Security Office. Have you got a story?
