The European Commission has rejected Ukraine's request for 220 million euros in emergency, non-repayable support for its agricultural sector, Bloomberg reported, citing Ukrainian Agriculture Minister Taras Vysotskyi. The funding had been sought to subsidise interest payments on loans taken by small and medium-sized agricultural producers under Ukraine's Affordable Loans at 5-7-9% programme, with Brussels confirming in August it was assessing the request before indicating that support could instead be channelled through existing financial mechanisms rather than a new grant. Kyiv said the EU contribution could have helped unlock an agricultural loan portfolio worth up to 4 billion euros at a time when disruptions to Black Sea exports and attacks on port infrastructure have squeezed market access and strained working capital for farmers. The proposed funding was intended to cover wages, land rents, storage, processing and transport costs while helping producers prepare for the next sowing
