Sydney Airport has experienced four near collisions on runways within weeks, with preliminary investigations revealing air traffic controllers were at high risk of fatigue due to staffing shortages. The most serious incident was classified as a Category A runway incursion, only the third such event in Australia since 2003, with aircraft stopping as close as 30 metres apart. Investigators found Sydney recorded the highest confliction rate post-COVID after losing more than 100 controllers during the pandemic, with controllers working overtime and managing multiple roles while conducting training.
