There’s a reason fuel prices can explode even when crude oil doesn’t move by the same amount. It comes down to something most Australians have probably never heard of. The CRACK SPREAD. Crude oil isn’t petrol or diesel. It still needs to be refined, and the crack spread is essentially the margin between the cost of crude and the value of the finished fuels produced from it. When global refining capacity gets squeezed, that margin can surge. And that helps explain how a fuel company can report enormous refining profits at the exact same time Australians are getting smashed at the bowser. It’s not necessarily some conspiracy. It’s the economics sitting between the barrel of crude oil and the litre of fuel going into your car. The bigger concern for me is how exposed Australia is when global refining markets get disrupted.
