NASA’s new space telescope has finally opened its eyes — but the first view from the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope looks surprisingly strange. Roman’s Wide Field Instrument has captured its first starlight, producing enormous, blurry, donut-shaped stars. But nothing is broken. The telescope is still being aligned and focused as NASA prepares it for full science operations and its first true science images. Once operational, the Roman Space Telescope will combine a Hubble-sized mirror with a field of view around 100 times larger, allowing astronomers to survey enormous regions of the universe at unprecedented speed. Roman will investigate dark energy and dark matter, discover thousands of exoplanets through gravitational microlensing, search for rogue planets drifting through the Milky Way without stars, and repeatedly observe huge regions of space for objects and events astronomers may not even know to look for yet. And following Roman’s remarkably precise launch, NASA says the spa
