Andy Burnham has announced a national commission to examine changes to the system used to elect MPs. He says Labour will put a commitment to electoral reform in its next general election manifesto. The commission will consider alternatives to first past the post and invite other parties to take part. Burnham has not chosen a replacement system or announced a referendum. His argument is that the current system could hand a party power with less than 30% of the vote. Lord Hayward calls the commission “a charade” and argues that its conclusion may already be decided. He says changing the rules out of fear that a particular party could win would strengthen Reform UK’s case that the political establishment is against it. Julia Hartley-Brewer speaks with Lord Robert Hayward, Conservative peer and pollster. Have you got a story?
