Latvia is prepared to host nuclear weapons on its territory if NATO collectively decides such a deployment is necessary, Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs said while commenting on a British proposal to strengthen nuclear protection for members of the Joint Expeditionary Force. Rinkēvičs said Latvian law does not prohibit hosting nuclear weapons and recalled that NATO members had confirmed during Latvia's preparations to join the alliance in 2003 that there were no restrictions on participation in its full collective security mechanism, including nuclear deterrence. However, he stressed that no negotiations are currently underway over deploying nuclear weapons in Latvia.
