Australia DESPERATELY needs more homes. But right now, we’re putting MORE labour into construction and getting LESS housing out the other end. That’s the productivity problem sitting underneath our housing shortage. And now construction is competing with another enormous building boom. AI. Data centres require construction workers, specialist trades, electricity, infrastructure and billions of dollars of investment. Many of the same resources Australia already needs to build more housing. The irony is that AI could eventually make Australia far more productive. But we have to BUILD the AI economy before we get the productivity benefits from it. So in the short term, that investment could add even more demand to an economy already struggling with capacity constraints, potentially adding to the inflation pressures the RBA is trying to bring down.
