Scientists recreated conditions believed to exist inside the hidden ocean of Enceladus, Saturn’s icy moon — and an Earth microorganism was able to keep growing and producing methane. The experiment strengthens the possibility that certain forms of life could function under conditions similar to those inside Enceladus’s subsurface ocean. But an entirely separate discovery may be even more important. NASA’s Cassini spacecraft revealed that Enceladus blasts material from its underground ocean into space through enormous plumes. New research suggests that as these ocean droplets freeze, salts, organic compounds, and potentially biological material could become concentrated inside individual ice grains. That means future spacecraft searching for alien life on Enceladus may not need to drill through kilometers of ice. The moon could already be delivering samples of its hidden ocean directly into space. In this video, we explore the Enceladus ocean experiment, methane-producing microbes, Cass
