Three commercial tankers have reportedly been struck by unknown projectiles in or around the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most important oil and gas shipping routes. The Kuwaiti-operated VLCC Al Funtas was reportedly hit while transiting the Strait, with a fire breaking out onboard before being extinguished. The crew was reported safe, with no environmental impact reported and the vessel continuing its journey. Additional reports describe a crude oil tanker and an LNG tanker being struck, although their identities have not been publicly confirmed in the initial maritime warnings. The UKMTO has described the weapons involved as “unknown projectiles,” and responsibility for the incidents has not been formally established. Iran has faced scrutiny because of its broader actions and warnings toward shipping in the region, but there has been no confirmed public attribution linking Iranian forces to all three reported incidents.
