MS NOW has new reporting that Republican Senator Eric Schmitt ignored warnings about texts his team received from the Justice Department regarding former special counsel Jack Smith. According to a source with direct knowledge of the conversation, the senator was told the texts were "unvetted," but he used them anyway. Schmitt accused Smith of attending an Atlanta Hawks basketball game in February 2024, suggesting he was in Georgia to collude with the Fulton County district attorney who was investigating Donald Trump separately. It turns out Smith was at an Iowa Hawkeyes game, not a Hawks game. MS NOW has learned that Senate Judiciary Committee staffers explicitly warned Schmitt’s team that the texts were unvetted and that it was their responsibility to verify the information. MS NOW reporter Mychael Schnell, one of the journalists on the story, joins Morning Joe to break it down.
