Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said in New Delhi that the current rise in global oil prices is being driven by disruptions to supply routes and higher freight costs, rather than a shortage of crude. He said global oil supply is around 104 million barrels a day against consumption of about 94 million barrels. Puri also said Indian consumers were largely insulated from the recent global crude price surge, while stressing the need to reduce dependence on a single fuel source.
