Prisoners freed under the first wave of the new early release scheme have thanked Prime Minister Andy Burnham – while others have expressed concerns over how they will cope on the outside. Around 700 prisoners across England and Wales are expected to walk free on October 1 under the controversially expanded programme to free up spaces in prisons. Ministers say the expanded early release scheme is needed to prevent the justice system from collapsing, after a summer when the issue dominated news headlines. #earlyrelease #prison #burnham • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews?lang=en Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on X: https://twitter.com/itvnews
