When a young person commits a serious crime, our first instinct is often to ask, “What’s wrong with that child?” Preston Simpson challenges us to ask a different question: “What’s happening around that child?” Examining the complex causes of repeat youth offending, he argues that prevention, support, and rehabilitation offer a more effective path to safer communities than punishment alone. Preston enjoys basketball, gaming, and spending time at the gym. He competes in both under-18 and men's basketball competitions and values the discipline, teamwork, and commitment that sport teaches. Curious about the world around him and motivated by a desire to make a positive difference, Preston enjoys exploring big ideas and understanding the challenges facing his community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
