The card surcharge might have disappeared from your receipt. The COST hasn’t disappeared. From 1 October, businesses can no longer separately surcharge customers for most major card payments. But they still incur costs every time you tap your card. And this is the part I think gets lost in the cost-of-living conversation. The ACCC explicitly says businesses can incorporate those payment costs into their overall prices. The RBA itself says customers at businesses that previously surcharged may end up paying a similar amount, just through the sticker price instead. Now, there IS another side to this. Interchange fee caps have also been reduced, and the government estimates the broader reforms could save businesses around $910 million each year. So hopefully, over time, businesses genuinely do pay less to accept cards. But until those processing costs disappear entirely, somebody still has to wear them. The café. The customer.
