The Cascadia Subduction Zone can produce a magnitude 9 earthquake from Northern California to Vancouver Island. New research suggests the aftermath could be worse than previously understood. In this documentary, we reconstruct the 1700 Cascadia earthquake, the “orphan tsunami” recorded in Japan, and new studies showing that the fault may rupture from end to end while its shallow offshore section remains locked. But the most important finding concerns what happens after the shaking stops. Parts of the Pacific Northwest coast could suddenly drop several feet, permanently changing their relationship with the ocean. Flood zones could expand overnight, exposing thousands of additional people, buildings, roads and critical infrastructure. We also examine tsunami warning limits, liquefaction, vertical evacuation structures and what scientists actually mean when they estimate Cascadia’s future risk. The earthquake lasts minutes. The coastline it leaves behind could be changed for genera
