An 18-year-old P-plate driver lost control of a BMW on Newcastle's M1 Link Road, ploughing into crowds gathered to farewell the Newcastle Knights on their way to the Grand Final. A five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were critically injured, with eight others hospitalised, as the car spun on a roundabout and struck a group of ten people. The incident occurred during what was meant to be a celebratory send-off for the team's first Grand Final appearance in 25 years.
