The Indian Flydubai pilot hailed as a hero for helping to thwart a suspected hijacking attempt by his co-pilot has said he could not “let everybody else die”. Captain Smit Machchhar is recovering in an Abu Dhabi hospital after he was stabbed by his Omani co-pilot on a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight on Wednesday. Speaking publicly for the first time in a video call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, the pilot said: “I had so many wounds. I had fallen down... I was thinking what if I don’t get up? “I was fighting for my life. At one point, I realised that if I didn’t get up… then passengers would lose their lives.” • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@itvnews?lang=en Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on X: https://twitter.com/itv
