Spain's housing crisis has erupted into mass protests, with tens of thousands taking to the streets across around 50 cities, including Madrid, after parliament rejected two government housing decrees. Organisers estimated nearly 500,000 protesters in Madrid, while authorities put the figure at around 70,000. Demonstrators are demanding lower rents, stronger tenant protections and restrictions on property investment funds, while a general strike is being discussed. The protests intensified after the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal became a symbol of Spain's housing affordability crisis. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's parliamentary defeat has also renewed speculation over snap elections as housing anger threatens to become a wider political crisis. #spain #madrid #spainhousingcrisis #housingcrisis #madridprotests #spainprotests #pedrosanchez #sanchez #rentcrisis #housingprotest #generastrike #europe #europeanpolitics #politicalcrisis #timesnowworld Stay connected with Time
