Hundreds of galaxy clusters appeared to be moving together across billions of light-years — a mysterious phenomenon astronomers called Dark Flow. But what could possibly influence galaxies on such an enormous scale? Scientists investigated known structures like the Great Attractor, massive galaxy clusters, and the cosmic web. Yet the original Dark Flow researchers proposed something far more extraordinary: the motion could carry an imprint from structures or conditions beyond the observable universe. Then ESA’s Planck spacecraft searched for the signal — and failed to confirm it. So was Dark Flow simply a measurement error, or could it be one of our only clues to what exists beyond the cosmic horizon? In this video, we explore Dark Flow, galaxy cluster motion, the cosmic microwave background, WMAP, Planck, the Great Attractor, cosmic inflation, and the mystery of what may lie beyond the observable universe.
