The Conservative Party conference opens in Birmingham as Kemi Badenoch sets out her plans to rebuild the party after its 2024 election defeat. Her new 95-page statement of principles comes as the Conservatives compete with Reform UK for voters on the right. The question of whether the two parties could work together remains unresolved. Badenoch has ruled out a deal, but some voters are asking whether a divided right could allow Labour to win again. A Conservative councillor says any agreement would take compromises. He argues that the Tories must first earn back voters’ trust, but says the right may need to find a way to keep the left out if they cannot. Duncan Barkes speaks with Conservative councillor Matthew Goodwin-Freeman. Have you got a story?
