Around 700 prisoners were released early last week under the government’s plan to ease overcrowding in England and Wales. Justice Secretary Alex Norris says he cannot yet give a figure for how many have been fitted with electronic tags. The government has introduced a presumption that offenders leaving prison will be tagged and monitored. The missing figure has raised questions about how the system is working and what protection victims have when offenders are released. The Reform UK deputy leader says the Justice Secretary should know the number and argues that public safety is being put at risk. He also describes a woman he knows who, he says, has left the country because she fears her abuser’s early release. Benedict Spence speaks with Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice.
